In 2017, a number of changes in legislation were adopted that affected the interests of minorities in Ukraine during the year. The impact is very significant and concerns such sensitive aspects of human rights as the language of education and language quotas in the media. On September 28, 2017 a new law “On Education” came into force in this country. The most acute problem with this law is the question of the language of education in Ukraine. The law introduces an actual ban on education in any language other than Ukrainian. From 2018, the teaching of subjects in the languages of national minorities will only be available in elementary schools. Four hundred thousand children will not be able to receive education in their native language.
